That Gum Tried to Kill Me: Opening a Pack of 1981 Topps Baseball Cards
    By Rob Opens Wax

Ah, 1981, the year MTV launched, the Dodgers took home the World Series title, and Topps no longer stood alone as the exclusive baseball card producer. So what better way to celebrate than to crack open a wax pack that’s been sealed longer than some of my viewers have been alive?

We opened a vintage pack of 1981 Topps baseball cards, and let me tell you, it was a time capsule, complete with cardboard heroes, bubble gum fossils, and a smell that screamed “Reagan Era.” Right out of the gate, the gum made me gasp like it had been cursed by a 400-year-old wizard. Not only was it moldy, it had gone full toxic, the kind of stuff you could use to de-rust a car bumper. Naturally, I touched it anyway.

Now let’s talk about the set.

The 1981 Topps Baseball Set – A Quick Rundown
Topps was no longer in the solo spotlight after legal dust-ups with Fleer and Donruss. This set clocked in at 726 cards, released in one series . It featured full-color photos bordered in solid white with the team name arched in a bold hat. Simple, clean, classic.

    Who You’re Chasing
The rookie card chase in 1981 Topps includes:

    • Harold Baines RC
    • Tim Raines RC
    • Fernando Valenzuela RC (shared with Mike Scioscia and Jack Perconte)
    • Kirk Gibson RC

You’ll also find legends like Rickey Henderson (in his 2nd year), George Brett, Mike Schmidt, Nolan Ryan, and Reggie Jackson all in their prime.

    What Did We Pull?
In my pack, we landed a couple of commons, a few minor stars, and a gloriously off-center card of a guy with a mustache you could land a plane on. No major rookies this time, but every card brought a blast of nostalgia and that’s what it’s all about.

    The Verdict
Opening a 1981 Topps pack is like watching an old home movie, a little fuzzy, a bit off-color, but full of memories. Just… don’t eat the gum. Seriously, I’m pretty sure I aged five years just inhaling it.

If you’re into mustaches, miscuts, and maybe a shot at a rookie Hall of Famer, 1981 Topps is worth ripping mold and all.
